This is the whole story of GM, it seems. They had great concepts, but when it came time to execute, they couldn't do anything particularly well – build quality, styling, fit and finish... It seems like the only GM products from the 80s through the early 00s that were really impressive and/or class competitive were the ones where the product development team was isolated from normal GM practices (e.g. 1st gen Saturn, possibly also 1st gen Oldsmobile Aurora).
I mean, GM came up with cars like this (1992 Ultralite Concept):
...but then built uninspiring things like this:

mostly a bit strange - in hindsight

What's really disappointing to me is that the concept looked pretty nice. Nothing I would buy mind you, but much better than the final product. I always thought it was the small size of the wheel-tire combo that betrayed the image they were trying to project.
Oddly enough, the wheel issue never bothered me on the Buick Rendezvous.

I would be seriously worried if my turds came out that color...

That 'nothing I would buy' was exactly the point though :/
